Yesterday, I was 100% skeptical about Microsoft supposedly bringing Windows 7 to ARM tablets. I figured Redmond was being deliberately ambiguous about *which* version of Windows in order to do a snow job on tech-challenged, deadline-pressed biz journos (ever heard of Windows Embedded Compact? It’s only been around, oh, 14 YEARS.)

I only know of two K-12 schools that have come close to doing full 1-1 rollouts of iPads to their students. (NetWeaver Mobile information corrected with details from my compatriots at SAP)
Executive keynotes obviously have their place, delivering the Vendor’s Big Message. Which is why they rarely deliver the technical and roadmap info that users and developers crave. So while the speeches of SAP CTO Vishal Sikka and Sybase executive vice-president Raj Nathan were well-received by the tech analysts yesterday at SAP’s Influencer Summit in Silicon Valley, many more details on SAP and Sybase’s mobile plans came out in a more-intimate afternoon deep-dive session.

It’s undeniable that the PC is superior to a smartphone or tablet for many things. Desktop publishing or extensive data entry, for example. But cynics forget that the converse is also true: mobile devices are better than PCs, even laptops, in a whole mess of scenarios.

“You ready?” “I was BORN ready.” There’s a reason this line is a cliche of cheesy action movies, and the comedies that make fun of them (video): it’s utter nonsense, and likely to cause Big Trouble in your Little Enterprise.

Its endowment is tiny, and its students are mostly commuters looking for a cost-effective education without having to leave home. Yet Long Island University’s massive deployment of 6,000 iPads to students and faculty has made it the leader among universities in the U.S., and probably worldwide.
