On an huge day for Silicon Valley M&A, Apple’s buy of “do engine” (CEO’s words) startup, Siri, was the second biggest deal behind HP gobbling up Palm.
With Apple-Siri, most of the attention has been paid to the sizzle: Siri’s voice-enabled iPhone app that lets users ask things like “Get me directions to the nearest Szechuan restaurant.” (more…)

I don’t know what Wired magazine editor Chris Anderson’s religious beliefs are, but on the fate of old media, the man has faith.
During a keynote speech at the Ad:Tech digital marketing conference in San Francisco earlier this week, Anderson made a strong case for the existence of Life (for print magazines) After Tablets (like the iPad). I wish I, a former member of the journalistic tribe, had the same conviction. (more…)

Forget the iPad’s undeniable ‘Ooh! Shiny!’ goodness for a moment: there are also interesting non-technical reasons for IT departments to allow Apple’s iPad into their enterprises, as two recent blogs highlight.

As a kid, I was a huge fan of military history. One thing I learned was this: more than sophisticated weapons or brilliant generals, whether an army can efficiently resupply itself is often the key to victory or defeat.
Napoleon’s 1812 invasion of Russia failed when provisions couldn’t reach the frontto feed his starving soldiers. And some historians blame the British army’s inadequate logistics for its defeat by the American revolutionaries. (more…)

Sometimes the messenger — and the recipient — are more important than the message. So it was with Morgan Stanley analyst Mary Meeker’s speech on Monday at the Google campus.
Talking to a group of enterprise CIOs, Meeker trotted out slides with impressive statistics underpinning one basic theme: the mobile Internet bandwagon is finally revving up, so get on board.
