SMS or Short Messaging Service is being used by millions of mobile phone users as you read this blog.
Here is a fact...Sybase 365 aids the delivery of nearly 6 billion messages each month.
Originally limited by 160 characters and the small phone keyboard, SMS language evolved. Its objective is to use the minimum number of characters to create a comprehensive message. I know, as most parents find out, that this is constantly evolving and our children are experts at it, so why are we as Enterprise System developers not taking full advantage?
Think about it - SMS users are acting as message producers and consumers and are taking advantage of this transport in a number of ways.
- instant and reliable delivery,
- fire and forget,
- store and forward,
- seamless usage of technically disparate and geographically dispersed networks
These are all the sort of terms that Enterprise messaging likes to use as well. So for a Mobile architecture and a mobile application, such as one written with Sybase PocketBuilder, that wants to do some messaging, try using SMS. Remember your mobile worker may not always be within cellular access and that message needs to be acted upon as soon as they re-join the network. Also the mobile application may need to send discrete pieces of information back to corporate systems or customers.
Answer...
Question for you. Can you or your application read this? You probably can later if you try hard enough!
Think about it...Can you utilise this sort of messaging in your architecture?

This has got me thinking about what applications could use SMS?
Are there businesses that function using SMS versus a heavier system?
could i use sms for product lookup like banks are using it for balance and transfers...
interesting
can PocketBuilder use SMS in an app? how would it store those messages in the device?
