Was'SUP : The tooling story - Visual Studio or Eclipse; your choice, we support!!

Once upon a time the developers kingdom got split into two provinces, Visual Studio (Windows Platform) and Eclipse (Windows and every other platform) based on various factors like corporate IT decisions, deployment environment, language familiarity, etc. There were some other splinter provinces like (Netbeans, etc.) which continued to have a decent community but not large enough to cause any trouble.

Outside the Data Center

Hello, my name is Dave Neudoerffer, Vice President of engineering for Sybase iAnywhere. So you think you know what SQL Anywhere is…SQL Anywhere 11 just might change your mind. SQL Anywhere is actually a lot of different things. But first and foremost, it is a database management system for managing data outside the traditional data center. There are a lot of places of business where you need to manage data, but you don’t have administrators and IT staff to keep an enterprise type DBMS running. A common misconception here is that this is about managing and syncing data on a mobile device. Well, that's part of it, but a small part actually. We see serious data in retail stores, warehouses, small businesses, departments of large businesses, in manufacturing plants, and behind a lot of common software and systems such as accounting systems, point of sale, network management software, backup systems, phone systems, contact relationship management systems and inspection systems.

Was'SUP - No, I'm not that cool, it's still geek speak!!

You are going to hear a lot of this feeble attempt at humor from the resident geeks at Techwave (I guess we can exclude the marketing folks as they are pretty cool). If you have been attending the past few years of Techwave or visited Sybase home page or may be have attended any one of the presentations over the last few years, there has been a lot of chatter about Unwired Enterprise Platform.

PowerBuilder Launch Party and PowerBuilder "Gear" Challenge

Deborah Harrington, the Senior Sales Director for PowerBuilder in North America loves parties. So, in celebration of the PowerBuilder 11.5 Launch and to say thank you to all PowerBuilder customers attending TechWave, we’re holding a PowerBuilder Launch Party hosted by, you guessed it, Deborah Harrington (and the many Sybase PowerBuilder team members). But let’s not kid anyone, it’s Deborah’s party!

Looking for feedback: logical process manager

I am working on a future version of ASE and am interested in hearing about your experiences with the logical process manager (LPM).  LPM consists of engine groups and execution classes, as well as the ability to set spid priority in an ad-hoc manner via sp_setpsexe.  This functionality is sometimes referred to as application queues.

If you have used this feature I’d like to know:

  • What was the use case (in other words, why did you use it)?
  • What elements did you use?  How did you use it?
  • Did it meet your needs?  Did you run into problems?
  • Any shortcomings or requirements that weren’t met?
  • What was your overall impression?

If you evaluated the functionality but chose not to use it, please let me know what you were trying to accomplish and why you decided against using LPM.

Finally, if you have use cases or requirements around managing multiple applications in a single ASE server, or managing the priority / resources of specific spids, please pass those along.  Unaddressed use cases are extremely useful to hear about.

Please provide your feedback directly to me at david.wein@sybase.com, and include “logical process manager feedback” in the mail subject (I get a lot of mail and this will help make sure I don’t miss your mail!).  Please be as detailed and specific as you can about your use cases and results.

Thanks a bunch,
Dave

Managing the Data Explosion: Peter Thawley's Musings

Hi! I’m Peter Thawley, a Senior Director and Architect in the CTO Group at Sybase. With nearly 20 years of work with Sybase products, both as a customer and an employee, I’ve experienced the full gamut of Sybase’s highs and lows. Most of you know me as the original author of sp_sysmon and a performance & tuning guy. Today, I spend a lot of my time working with customers on some of the more difficult problems they face in distributed data management – some of it is operational type of work with DBAs, some architectural with application development teams.

Helloooo PowerBuilder Developers!

Helloooo PowerBuilder Developers! John Strano here, Technology Evangelist for Sybase. You know, I really do consider myself ‘Joe PowerBuilder’, having been a developer, having taught PowerBuilder, and having learned a mountain of stuff from those who'd program rings around me when I first met them. Frankly the greatest source of what I’ve learned over the last 17 years is my peers. Guess where the greatest concentration of your peers will be this year? Of course, TechWave. PowerBuilder has been more than central to my career, just like for many of you. And to keep both our careers moving full steam ahead, I've been working with the PowerBuilder teams to assemble technical sessions that’ll be presented by some talented peers, education sessions and an informative plenary session covering the latest and greatest news we have for PowerBuilder. This’ll all be showcased at “PowerBuilder Central”…our annual TechWave conference held in August.
