With Green Envy

An interesting email debate arose among my Evangelism colleagues today about whether "greening of the data center" was important to Sybase customers.

Opinions varied, some saying that "green" was a consideration that would only resonate with hardware and raised-floor types, and that it didn’t matter much to the software architects. Others argued that membership in the various green data center initiatives will help educate users about Sybase’s commitments to efficient infrastructures and raise visibility. Still others argued that Sybase servers, particularly Sybase IQ, are already "green" solutions and that we’re already reaping those benefits.

Techwave Info

I’ve captured some key points from some of the keynotes from 1st and 2nd days. Don’t hold me accountable for the numbers as the keynote was pretty early in the morning for Las Vegas and I could be hearing things --).

IT and the Secret of Life

Often times, engineers here at Sybase ask me “where’s the market going”.  I wish I knew.  If I did, I could trade stocks for a few minutes a day and forego all this fun.  But I’m a better evangelist than stock picker, so I’ll stick to that, for now at least.

The question of where the market is going, of what our users need next, always reminds me of the comedy film “City Slickers” in which Curley, a scarey old cowboy (played by the recently-departed Jack Palance) asks Mitch (played by Billy Crystal) if he knows what the secret of life is.

Mitch sets up the zinger by answering “No, what?”.  Curley, never wasting a word, holds up a single index finger and says, “One thing, just one thing…”.  Mitch impatiently asks what the one thing is, to which Curley replies “That’s what you’ve got to figure out.”

Curley was right, you have to figure out the one thing.

Howdy

My name is Mark Matson and I'm the latest to be recruited to this new-fangled Sybase blog to offer up insights, wisdom and the occational (and very rare, I'm sure) bad brilliant idea.  I believe blogs are at their best when they don't try to duplicate the formality and structure of technical papers but instead provide an open discussion among professionals similar to what you get over the water cooler.  This isn't the place for Techwave presentations, but the conversation after the presentation on the way over to the bar.  I think it is better to get an idea out there, make mistakes, get feedback, correct mistakes and continue on with the conversation than to play it safe.  Let's see how far this philosophy gets us.

For my first entry, though, I thought I'd introduce myself, both because it seems the polite thing to do, but also for the practical reason that any time in the future one asks who that Mark dude is, they can be pointed to this entry.

Hi, my name is Bill Jacobs and I'm an Evangelist.
